Mindful Consumption of Magic

It is important as we pursue any spiritual path that we consider whether we are consumers or creators. We are made in the image of a Creator, so we are meant to be creators ourselves. But with magic, as with anything in life, there is going to be some level of consumption. So with that we must be cognizant of our impact on other humans, our more-than-human kin, and our Mother Earth. So how do we consume ethically? There are no correct answers that fit everyone, but here are some thoughts:

Does this rock want to be removed from where it is?

This is a question I’ve struggled with a lot lately, and I no longer purchase stones. It’s going to depend on whether you believe stones are sentient, and what role you believe they play in the environment. I’m coming to believe that our Mother put them where they are for a reason, and we shouldn’t be messing with that. I do own some crystals, and I use my black tourmaline regularly, but for the time being, I won’t be purchasing any more.

Where is this herb coming from?

Is it endangered? Does it belong to a certain community? Is there an alternative that I could grow myself? If I want to grow it myself, is it invasive? Does this herb serve more than one purpose (soil remediation, home for insects, medicinal purposes, edible…)?

Where does this item go when I’m done with it?

There is so much cool witchy stuff and I want it ALL! And… overconsuming is harming the planet, exactly what I’m trying to get away from. If you use a wand, do you need one with glitter and crystals on it? Would a carved stick do? It will go back to the earth at the end of its life as a wand. Think through this with everything you purchase or make. Where will it go when I’m done? If it can’t go back to the earth, maybe try to think of an alternative.

Who made this item?

I’m really good at this with clothing. My witchy wardrobe is all either secondhand or from small businesses. I buy candles from a small business. I buy my herbal teas from a small business. But I could be better about thinking it through for other items. It’s just something I’m trying to be more aware of.

Do I really need this thing?

Intention is everything. So is there something I already have that can serve the same purpose? Am I collecting items just to fit my aesthetic? (Oof. Preaching to the choir here)

Let us be mindful in all things, dear friends, and for now, particularly in the ethics of our magical consumption.

What did I miss? What things are important to you when you think about the ethical consumption of magical items?
